Leadership communications: when does an executive’s word carry more weight than the company’s?

A corporate statement and an executive’s assessment in their own words can carry the same information. Which one readers believe is often decided by what the speaker has said in the past.

What is leadership communications?

Leadership communications is the practice of planning how CEOs and senior executives consistently convey their expertise, views and the decisions they make on behalf of the organization across the media, professional networks, events and internal channels. Its core components are spokesperson preparation, a content calendar and media training.

Where are leaders’ voices heard?

~2/3of respondents worry that journalists, government leaders and CEOs purposely mislead them[1]
73%of B2B decision-makers find thought leadership more trustworthy than marketing materials[2]
75%of decision-makers started researching a new solution because of thought leadership content[3]

Trust is built on the sum of what is said over the years

The Edelman 2025 Trust Barometer shows that roughly two-thirds of respondents worry that journalists, government leaders and CEOs are deliberately misleading them.[1] In this climate, a single brilliant interview is not enough to build trust in an executive; readers look at what the executive has said over time and whether it has come true.

That is why we begin leadership communications not with a media list but by identifying the two or three topics in which the executive is a genuine expert. Once the topics are clear, interviews, op-eds, panels and professional network posts follow the same line, and the executive does not take on a different persona on every channel.

How do you prepare a spokesperson?

  1. Area of expertise

Two or three topics on which the executive has genuine authority are identified.

  2. Point-of-view set

Short, evidence-backed, quotable viewpoints are written for each topic.

  3. Media training

Rehearsals cover tough questions, on-camera appearances and time-limited interviews.

  4. Channel calendar

Interviews, op-eds, panels and professional network posts are placed on an annual calendar.

  5. Feedback

Coverage and engagement are reviewed quarterly, and the topic set is updated.

Leadership Communications: frequently asked questions

Why does CEO communication matter?

An organization’s decisions are often interpreted through the words of its top executive. In the Edelman 2025 Trust Barometer, roughly two-thirds of respondents worry that leaders, including CEOs, are misleading them, which makes consistent, evidence-based executive communication even more decisive.

Are thought leadership and personal branding the same thing?

Thought leadership is an executive demonstrating expertise on specific topics through data and viewpoints. A personal brand is a broader concept; thought leadership can be one of its most credible foundations.

Can any executive be a spokesperson?

Being a spokesperson requires command of the subject, authority to speak on behalf of the organization and preparation for facing the media. Once suitable executives are selected, they are prepared through media training.

What does media training cover?

Media training covers message preparation, conduct for different interview formats, handling tough and unexpected questions, on-camera and on-mic rehearsals, and serving as a spokesperson in a crisis.

How is the impact of leadership communications measured?

Media coverage and quote frequency, panel and speaking invitations, engagement on professional networks, and visibility in searches for the brand and executive names are tracked together.
