Corporate publishing: when is a report made to be read, and when is it made for the archive?
Many annual reports start out as a legal requirement and stay that way. Structured the right way, the same pages can become the source for investor presentations, press kits and recruitment content.
What is corporate publishing?
Corporate publishing covers the periodic and one-off publications an organization produces in its own name, such as annual reports, sustainability reports, employee magazines, customer newsletters, e-books and digital content series. It delivers the organization’s knowledge, data and expertise to stakeholders in a controlled format.

Why have an organization’s own publications regained their value?
In the Edelman 2025 Trust Barometer, roughly two-thirds of respondents say they find it hard to tell trustworthy news from disinformation.[1] For a journalist, investor or job candidate looking for accurate information about a company, a dated, signed corporate publication with transparent data is one of the first documents to turn to amid that confusion.
The same trend holds in B2B. In the 2024 Edelman–LinkedIn study, 73% of decision-makers say an organization’s thought leadership content is a more trustworthy basis for assessing its capabilities than its marketing materials.[2] A well-crafted industry report or expert magazine is one of the most lasting forms of that content.
Which publication, for which reader?
| Heading | Reader | Frequency | Core purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Annual report | Investors, regulators, press | Annual | Documenting the year’s performance and direction |
| Sustainability report | Investors, customers, civil society | Annual | Showing environmental and social targets with data |
| Employee magazine | Employees and their families | Quarterly | Making company culture and people’s stories visible |
| Customer or dealer newsletter | Customers, dealers, partners | Monthly | Sharing product, application and industry insight on a regular basis |
| Industry report, e-book | Decision-makers, press | Campaign-based | Proving expertise with data and becoming a news source |
A 12-week production timeline for an annual report
- Structure
The reader, core theme and section structure are defined; last year’s report is reviewed through the reader’s eyes.
- Data and interviews
Data is collected from departments and interviews are held with executives.
- Copy and design
Copy is written, and data visualizations and page layouts are produced.
- Approval
Legal, finance and senior management approvals are consolidated into a single timeline.
- Publication and distribution
The print and digital editions are published; press, social media and presentation content is derived from the report.
The simplest way to tell whether a report is being read is to count how many separate pieces of content have been derived from it one month after publication.

Corporate Publishing: frequently asked questions
How long does it take to produce an annual report?
It depends on scope and approval processes, but a 10- to 12-week timeline works well for a mid-sized annual report. Data collection and approvals are usually the longest stages.
Should a corporate magazine be print or digital?
It depends on how readers access the publication. For field teams or employees working outside the office, a print edition and a mobile-friendly digital edition can be offered together. If search and sharing matter, the digital edition should take priority.
Can a sustainability report be combined with an annual report?
Yes. Some organizations publish an integrated report. The decision should be based on the target readership and reporting obligations.
Are corporate publications visible in search engines?
Yes, when the digital edition is published as web pages. Presenting headings, summaries and data on HTML pages in addition to the PDF makes it easier for search engines and AI assistants to use the content as a source.
Does an employee magazine improve employee engagement?
There is no general data showing that it does so on its own. A regular, authentic publication in which employees see their own stories works as part of internal communications, and its impact should be tracked through readership and feedback data.
